My 20th Century Art Professor recommend Arkham Asylum (Grant Morrison & Dave McKean) as a good example of design which has adopted the ideals of contemporary art. The book is not your typical comic and batman is not the typical hero. The plot and physiological character development is thick with political satire like corrupted leadership and dissolving boundaries of who is good/evil (i.e. who has the right motivation for action) . Also, the joker was portrayed quite terrifyingly. I am not a huge comic fan but this was a good read if a bit scary.
